LANSING, MI (WTVB) – State Representative Eric Leutheuser joined House colleagues on Wednesday to override Governor Snyder’s veto and enact legislation that had previously passed both chambers.
It was the first time the Legislature has overridden a veto by Snyder. The bills he vetoed last year regarded cutting the sales tax for Michigan residents trading in a vehicle for a new one.
Leutheuser says the House vote means additional tax relief for people who buy vehicles with a trade-in.
“As Michigan’s comeback continues, we need to look for fiscally responsible ways to provide our residents with tax relief,” said Leutheuser. “Now we can implement the full credit more quickly. It’s the right thing to do, and this is the right time to do it.”
Snyder said the veto override changes the state tax code without a way to pay for it. He also felt it challenges the fiscal responsibility his administration has demonstrated for the past seven years.
