UNION CITY, MI (WTVB) – It has been a long road back for a Union City High School senior after he was badly injured in a Calhoun County traffic accident last summer.
17-year-old Tobey Austin was getting ready to enter his senior year at Union City where he was a three sport athlete when the accident took place July 30, 2017.
He was a passenger in a pickup truck driven by a 16-year-old girl who claimed she swerved to avoid a deer on U Drive South in Burlington Township and struck a tree.
Austin was partially ejected from the vehicle and was later taken to Borgess Medical Center. Austin could not walk for three months but after undergoing therapy, he was finally cleared for physical activity earlier this month.
#Tobeytough t-shirts and hoodies were sold in his honor with the money raised going to the Union City boys basketball program.
Austin saw his first game action for the Chargers varsity basketball team on Tuesday night as Union City defeated Springport 68-53.
A GoFundMe page was set up after Austin was injured to help raise money for his medical expenses.
