COLDWATER, MI (WTVB) – In high school gymnastics, Coldwater dropped their home opener to the Saline Hornets Monday night 134.125 – 126.875. The Cardinals collected their third Regional Qualifying score on the season in spite of the loss and posted their highest team score yet.
Three Cardinals were honored at the end of the meet for showing their team sportsmanship with the annual Jilly Award. The honor is given out to the gymnasts by the Jillian Crist family each year at the home opener. Sarah Hughes, Laiken Skidmore, and Mya Tom were selected as this year’s recipients for their upbeat attitudes, positive spirit, and overall sportsmanship.
Coldwater’s Erica Rodgers posted the team high score at 8.45 on the vault for fourth place.
Rodgers was second on the uneven bars with a personal best score of 8.025.
On the balance beam, Sarah Hughes performed a nearly flawless routine and stuck the landing to score 8.1 points for the Cardinals.
Coldwater posted a season high team total of 34.925 points in floor exercise. Claire Sheppard earned a 2nd place finish with her season high mark of 9.05 to lead the Cards.
Rodgers was third in the all-around totaling 32.875 points. Sarah Hughes was fifth.
The gymnastics team travels to Lowell Saturday where they hope to secure the team’s spot in the MHSAA Regional competition.
On Thursday the girls will begin five weeks of Youth Lessons. Children ages 5 and up are invited to join the Varsity team to learn gymnastics skills. Contact the Coldwater High School Athletic Office for more information on how to sign up.
