COLDWATER, MI (WTVB) – Nearly a half dozen animals are safe after a small fire broke out in the Branch Area Careers Center barn Thursday morning.
Smoke was discovered by a maintenance worker. The Coldwater Fire Department with automatic aide the Quincy Fire Departments were dispatched at 7:56 a.m.. An “all-call” for Coldwater firefighters was issued a couple of minutes later.
Crews found light smoke coming from the barn when they arrived and were able to put out the fire within minutes of arrival.
They then evacuated the farm animals and removed the smoldering straw from the barn. Crews remained on scene until 9:00 a.m..
Fire Marshal Steve Trall says the fire was caused from a heat lamp power cord that caught the straw to the sheep pen on fire.
No animals were lost from the fire and no students were present. Lifecare Ambulance also assisted on scene.
Luckily, the straw and hay were reported to be wet which prevented the fire from spreading more quickly.
