BRANCH COUNTY, MI (WTVB) – The Coldwater Cardinals escaped with a 45-41 victory over the upset minded Hastings Saxons on Thursday night in an Interstate 8 boys basketball game at the Coach Floyd Eby Gymnasium.
The rugged contest featured a total of 32 fouls and technical fouls on each team.
Coldwater improved to 8-1 despite a 14-for-27 night at the foul line. The game was tied at 39-39 with two minutes to go but foul shots by Lu LeBron, Nate Tappenden and Brandon Downs along with a basket by Downs were enough to give Coldwater the win.
Downs led the Cardinals with a game-high 18 points while Spencer Rodesiler added 11 points and six rebounds. LeBron also had seven steals.

Coldwater swept the underclassmen games. They won the J.V. game 49-25 as Elijah Sloan scored 15 points while Joe Closson and Aiden Marsden both had 11 points and Zach Coffing grabbed eight rebounds. Coldwater won the freshman game 49-27 as Tyson Roby poured in 23 points and grabbed eight rebounds while Evan Porter had 14 points.
Elsewhere in Branch County boys basketball on Thursday night, the Bronson Vikings broke open a close game in the second half as they defeated the Quincy Orioles 59-40 in a Big 8 Conference game that featured a pair of Branch County rivals.
Quincy edged Bronson 14-13 in the first quarter but a 9-7 second quarter for the Vikings gave them a 22-21 halftime lead. Bronson took control with a 21-10 third quarter and outscored Quincy 16-9 in the fourth.
Reagan Mayer led Bronson with a game-high 18 points and eight rebounds while Aden Hathaway had 12 points and five assists while Mason Harris had 10 points. Jordan Shadix had five steals.
Quincy was led by Kyler Economou with 17 points, 14 rebounds, and 2 steals. Kyle Rodesiler had 10 points, 8 rebounds, and 2 assists, while Riley Miner chipped in with five points and 2 steals. Bronson has won three straight and are now 6-5 overall and 4-4 in the league. The Orioles are 5-5 overall and 4-4 in the Big Eight.
Quincy defeated Bronson in the J.V. game 49-46.
Union City lost at Big 8 Conference co-leader Homer 70-30.
