BATTLE CREEK, MI (WTVB) – A Battle Creek Police Officer was shot early Saturday morning and a man who is being called a person of interest is wanted by police.
Officer Jerry Johnson was shot three times as police were in the 300 block of Cherry Street.
They heard yelling from a house at about 1:15 a.m. and believed they saw a suspect who was wanted on warrants out of Calhoun and Saint Joseph Counties. People at the house would not let officers in.
Just over an hour later, someone inside started shooting and Johnson was struck near a garage. A fellow officer took him to Bronson Battle Creek Hospital where he was stabilized. Johnson was then taken to Bronson Methodist Hospital in Kalamazoo where he was reported to be in stable condition.
The suspect fled on foot and a search has been conducted of the nearby area which has included K-9 officers and a Michigan State Police helicopter. Police think the suspect was injured during the incident.
Police are looking for 30-year-old Andre Durrell Yarbrough as a person of interest in this incident. He is described as being a black male who is five-feet-11 inches tall and 165 pounds.
