TEKONSHA, MI (WTVB) – Crews from six fire departments had to battle a large fire which destroyed a home on 14 Mile Road a few miles north of Tekonsha in southern Calhoun County Tuesday night.
The fire at the two story home which belonged to Patrick Carmickle was reported at about 9:20 p.m..
Tekonsha Township Fire Chief Daryl Cummins says the home was fully involved in flames when they arrived.
Crews from Fredonia, Burlington, Newton, Homer, and Marshall Townships had to be called in to help fight the flames.
The two occupants of the residence managed to get to safety but Cummins says a family dog died in the fire.
Firefighters managed to keep the flames from spreading to the nearby Carmickle Aktive Propane dealership.
14 Mile Road had to be shut down between P Drive South and Moore Road.
Cummins said 95 percent of the nearly 6,000 square foot home was lost and damages are estimated at $400,000.
The cause of the fire is not known. The Michigan State Police Fire Marshall division has been called to help with the investigation.
Firefighters were on the scene until about 2:30 a.m. Wednesday morning.
