COLDWATER, MI (WTVB) – Nearly two dozen persons showed up Tuesday morning as the State of Michigan’s Marijuana Regulatory Agency held an education and outreach session in the City Council Chambers at the Henry L. Brown Municipal Building in Coldwater.
The sessions are being held after state voters said yes last November to having Michigan become the tenth state to allow adults over 21 to legally use marijuana for recreational purposes.
Agency representatives spent nearly an hour covering what steps potential applicants can take to participate in the licensed marijuana market.
Among the items covered were the social equity program as well as the application and license process.
The criteria to receive fee reductions include living in a community for five years that is considered to have been “disproportionately impacted” by marijuana prohibition and enforcement.
Coldwater is one of 41 such communities in the state. Applicants may receive an additional 25 percent reduction in fees if they have a marijuana conviction as long as it was not for distribution of a controlled substance to a minor. By taking part in the program, qualifying applicants can get a reduction of up to 60 percent off the application fee, the initial license fee, and future renewal fees.
The MRA will begin taking applications after November 1, 2019.
