MARSHALL, MI (WTVB) – The Coldwater High School girls cross country team won the Interstate 8 Conference title Saturday as they finished first in the conference meet hosted by Marshall. It’s the first conference title for Coldwater girls cross country since 1987 when Coldwater was part of the old Twin Valley Conference.
Coldwater broke a tie with Marshall by only scoring 51 points. Parma Western was second with 63 points followed by Marshall with 64.
Coldwater’s Elka Machan easily won the girls title for a second straight year in a time of 18:00.7. She is the only girl to ever win two I-8 titles in her career.
Legend Szafranski was 7th, Carolyn Potter was 12th, Cece DeWitt was 14th and Chloe Vickers was 17th. Machan, Szafranski, Potter and DeWitt earned All Conference honors.
The Coldwater boys were fifth. Kyle Foulk was sixth and earned all conference honors for a second straight year. Myron Lafty was 15th, John Aerts was 16th and Antonio Potter was 20th. Marshall tied Harper Creek for the boys title.
The Quincy boys earned a trophy with a third place finish while the Quincy girls were fifth Saturday at the Gobles Little Guys Invitational which featured 25 teams.
Eight Quincy runners earned medals. Rhett Reif finished third broke the Quincy freshman record which was set by Nick Michael from 1992 as he finished in a time of 17:09.07. Erik Butchart was ninth while Jacob Reif, Brady Harper and Caden Moore also earned medals.
Avery Rufenacht, MaKenzie Blatter and Molly Butchart all won medals in the girls meet.
