BATTLE CREEK, MI (WTVB) – Despite taking a 2-0 lead with just over 14 minutes to play, the Coldwater High School boys varsity soccer team fell in the Division 2 District Final 3-2 to third ranked Marshall Thursday night.
After a scoreless first half, the Cardinals finally broke through with 17:36 in the game on an Amine Mohammed goal, assisted by Ayash Ahmed. Amine Mohammed scored again with 14:06 to play, assisted by his brother Saleh Mohammed.
Marshall cut the lead to 2-1 with a goal with 11:51 to play, tied the score with 4:42 to play, and then scored the game winner with just 36 seconds to play.
Ahmed Salem made four saves in goal, as Coldwater outshot Marshall 9-7.
Coldwater reached the District Final by beating Charlotte 8-0 last week in the quarterfinals, then upsetting Division 2 top ranked Richland Gull Lake 4-3 in the semifinals Tuesday.
The Cardinals closed the season with a 13-8 record, while Marshall improved to 20-1-2. They will play the winner of the Thornapple Kellogg and Allegan District Final in the Regional Semifinals next Tuesday.
