COLDWATER, MI (WTVB) – The Coldwater Historic District Commission approved a Certificate of Appropriateness Wednesday night so that the Coldwater Elks Club can install a freestanding sign which would replace the metal sign that is above their electronic message board.
City Planner Dean Walrack said in his report the sign will meet all dimensional aspects of the City of Coldwater’s Sign Ordinance. He added it also significantly aligns with the Design Considerations laid out in the city’s Historic District Code.
The sign modification would be under terms of a settlement the Elks Club and the City of Coldwater reached in August. A nearly two year dispute centered around two variance requests covering the width and height of the sign.
Another part of the agreement said the cutout elk head was an architectural feature that would not count against the height or area of freestanding signage.
According to the Historic District Inventory, the building which houses the Elks Club at Pearl and Division was constructed in 1864.
