BATTLE CREEK, MI (WKZO AM/FM) — After a string of suspicious fires at vacant homes around Battle Creek, fire officials are now investigating a suspected intentional fire at a nearby freeway rest stop.
First responders were called to a possible structure fire at the rest stop on Eastbound I-94, just before Exit 97 for Capital Avenue around 4:30 a.m. Wednesday where they found trash cans in both men’s restrooms on fire.
They quickly extinguished the blaze, closed the restrooms, and ventilated the building.
Michigan State Police and the Michigan Department of Transportation are now investigating and questioning individuals about the incident.
This comes after six vacant structure fires in the Battle Creek area over the course of the last four weeks.
Four of those fires all occurred September 10 and it’s unclear if they’re connected.
