CALHOUN COUNTY, MI (WTVB) – A dozen area school districts have agreed to move back the start of outdoor athletic events due to concerns about the spread of Eastern Equine Encephalitis.
The districts include Union City, Tekonsha, Athens, Battle Creek, Harper Creek, Homer, Battle Creek Lakeview, Marshall and Pennfield.
Eastern Equine Encephalitis is spread through the bites of infected mosquitos. In order to cut down on mosquito bites, health officials have urged outdoor evening activities be postponed, rescheduled or cancelled.
Union City’s home football game with Reading this Friday night will start at 5:00 p.m.. This also happens to coincide with Union City’s Team of Fame evening and introduction of inductees. The team of fame induction will be held at halftime as previously scheduled.
Quincy’s J.V. and Varsity football games with Homer have also had time changes. The J.V. game on Thursday and the varsity game on Friday will both start at 5:30 p.m..
In addition, Coldwater’s boys soccer matches at Harper Creek for Thursday have been pushed back an hour. The JV match will start at 4:00 p.m. with the varsity match at 5:30 p.m..
A frost is needed to kill off mosquitos but mild temperatures are into the forecast for the next week.
