BATTLE CREEK, MI (WTVB) – In high school football, the Coldwater Cardinals scored four first half touchdowns and went on to defeat the Pennfield Panthers 45-28 on Friday night.
Coldwater built a 29-8 halftime lead. Jaxon Janusz threw a 22 yard touchdown pass to Austin Santure, Janusz scampered 36 yards for another score and Matt Gipple scored a pair of second quarter touchdowns from 31 and 19 yards out.
The Cardinals tacked on two more TD’s in the second half after Pennfield had cut the lead to 29-20. Damon Beckhusen scored from five yards out and Janusz wrapped up the scoring with a 39 yard TD.
Coldwater had 404 yards rushing with Beckhusen gaining 139 yards, Gipple had 132 yards on the ground and Janusz had 111 yards. The Cardinals had 429 yards of total offense while the Panthers had 309 yards. McDonald’s Player of the Game Dylan Targgart led the defense with 11 tackles.
Coldwater is 3-1 overall and 2-1 in the Interstate 8. They will host Jackson Northwest in the Cardinals Homecoming game next Friday night.

Reading won the annual “Battle for the Bell” for the third straight year as the Rangers romped to a 50-6 victory over Quincy. Evan Coon’s 73 yard touchdown was the only score for Quincy. The Orioles are now 2-1 in the Big 8 Conference and 2-2 overall.

The Vikings dropped to 0-4 overall and 0-3 in the Big 8 Conference.

The Comets had 429 yards of total offense as the Chargers dropped to 0-4 overall and 0-3 in the Big 8. Chargers quarterback Larson Kever left the game in the second quarter with an injury.
