UNION CITY, MI (WTVB) – The Village of Union City has announced the Senior Center Project is officially moving forward and that the Village will take ownership of the former Putnam Funeral Home building this week. The official name of the center will be “The Union City Senior Center”.
The Senior Center committee decided signage for the building will honor the memory of Jack Bronson of Sherwood Township, who passed away in May at the age of 84.
Bronson was known as “The Sweetcorn Man” as he grew sweetcorn that was popular in the region for three decades. He also made a number of generous donations to the community.
Village officials say there has been an outpouring of donations in the last month and they were able to clear an important hurdle at a crucial deadline.
The owner of the building promised to hold it while fundraising for the $150,000 needed for property and renovations took place. The deadline for the fundraising was August 31, 2019.
Funds are still needed for renovations. There are also rooms that are still available for naming rights and other opportunities for donors. If interested contact the Union City Village Office at (517) 741-8591.
