LANSING, MI (WTVB) – Parents who pay child support in Branch, Calhoun, Kalamazoo and St. Joseph Counties, and who are unemployed or underemployed can register for free career and job skills training in a pilot program.
This opportunity is being made possible through a collaboration between the Michigan Department of Health and Human Services and its Michigan Office of Child Support, the Michigan Department of Labor and Economic Opportunity Workforce Development and Michigan Works! Southwest.
The program’s objective is to encourage those who have shown they want to pay their child support but may not be able to due to lack of employment or the skills necessary to maintain steady employment.
Services are provided by Michigan Works! Southwest.
Those who participate in the Learn, Earn and Provide program, otherwise known as LEAP, must meet certain qualifications.
Several employment services are provided through the program.
Branch County Friend of the Court director/referee Lona Julien says, “We are excited to help eliminate barriers to supporting children and provide those who are motivated with resources to better both their lives and their child’s.”
Anyone who is interested should contact their friend of the court office or Michigan Works! Southwest.
