CAMBRIA TOWNSHIP, MI (WTVB) – A member of the Reading Community Fire Department was killed Saturday afternoon in a tractor accident on private property in Hillsdale County’s Cambria Township.
The Hillsdale County Sheriff’s Department report 50-year-old Robert Louis Berger of rural Hillsdale was operating a New Holland Tractor with a backhoe attachment which was digging a hole at a property in the 2400 block of South Sand Lake Road.
While operating the backhoe attachment, Berger became pinned. Deputies arrived at about 3:25 p.m. First responders administered first aid and attempted CPR to no avail. Berger was pronounced dead at the scene.
The incident remains under investigation. The Sheriff’s Department got assistance from the Montgomery and Hillsdale Rural Fire Departments, the Reading Emergency Unit and the Hillsdale County Victim Services unit.
Berger served the Reading Community Fire Department for 11 years.
