COLDWATER, MI (WTVB) – The Coldwater Cardinals improved to 2-0 as they defeated the Hastings Saxons 39-6 on Friday night in their Interstate 8 opener at Cardinal Field.
Coldwater had 351 yards of offense including 304 yards on the ground. Matt Gipple rushed for 171 yards and three touchdowns on nine carries. He got the Cardinals on the board just 46 seconds into the game as he rumbled 68 yards for a score. Cameron Torres and Gipple added first quarter touchdowns which gave Coldwater a 19-0 lead. Gipple scored his third touchdown early in the second quarter and Bo Branham’s TD right before halftime put the Cardinals ahead 33-6. Aiden Marsden closed the show with a 96 yard fumble return for a touchdown on the games final play. Our McDonald’s Players of the Game were Coldwater linebackers Austin Santure and Bo Branham. Branham had 13 tackles while Santure had 11 ½ tackles including four behind the line of scrimmage.
