THREE RIVERS, MI (WTVB) – The Southwest Michigan Land Conservancy is inviting volunteers to help them in future projects.
Among the projects is a “Create the Corey Lake Trail” workday at the Corey Lake North Bay Preserve in Three Rivers.
The focus of Wednesday’s workday was the clearing of brush for a visitor trail but SWMLC Stewardship Director Mitch Lettow says “often, our workdays are a combination of working on trails so that people can come to enjoy them, but also working on invasive plants, trash pickup, all sorts of things that make the ecosystem healthier too.”
One reason the Corey Lake Preserve was selected is to help preserve certain species of animal and plant life that thrive there.
“The site may have been a oak savannah historically, so there are certain wildflowers that we don’t see many of in today’s day and age,” Lettow said. “We’re hoping that our work out there will help promote those species and protect them as well.
Citizens are welcome to join any other workday throughout the year, however, it is suggested that participants plan ahead.
“It certainly helps if folks can RSVP so we know how many tools to bring and know how many people to expect, but the public is welcome to come out anytime,” Lettow said.
