MATTESON TOWNSHIP, MI (WTVB) – A build-up of lint in a clothes dryer is being cited as the cause of a fire late Friday night that destroyed a home at 1008 West Colon Road.
Three occupants of the home got out safely but three dogs and a cat perished in the flames.
Bronson firefighters were dispatched just after 11:00 p.m. Mutual aide was requested from the Colon and Sherwood Fire Departments.
Crews spent all night battling the fire and they were still at the scene well after sunrise on Saturday morning.
There were no human injuries.
Bronson Assistant Fire Chief Ken Stutzman says according to the homeowner, she put a load of clothes in the dryer and then smelled smoke. When she opened the door to the laundry room, she found the room was fully engulfed in flames.
The Branch County Sheriff’s Office Victim Services Unit along with the Red Cross are assisting the fire victims.
M-86 was shut down west of Athens Road until just after 8:30 a.m. on Saturday morning because of the fire.
