COLDWATER, MI (WTVB) – An Athens woman entered guilty pleas Monday in Branch County Circuit Court to two of the three charges that were filed against her and three co-defendants by the Michigan Attorney General’s Office in an alleged plot to kidnap, rape and kill a randomly selected child.
20-year-old Jayme Lynn LaPoint admitted her guilt to conspiracy to commit the crimes of kidnapping and first-degree criminal sexual conduct. A count of conspiracy to commit murder was dismissed in exchange for the pleas.
She entered a guilty plea to First Degree Criminal Sexual Conduct two weeks ago in a case filed by the Branch County Prosecutors office involving a two-year-old girl she was babysitting.
LaPoint is scheduled to be sentenced September 23, 2019. A court spokesperson says the sentences will be concurrent.
The others involved in the conspiracy case were Matthew Toole of Battle Creek, David Lee Bailey of Coldwater, and Talia Renee Furman of Springfield. All four were charged by the Michigan Attorney General’s Office in September 2018 following a Michigan State Police investigation.
