COLDWATER, MI (WTVB) – The severe thunderstorm which hit the City of Coldwater and the surrounding area May 23, 2019 was one of the worst power outages Coldwater had ever experienced. That is the assessment of Coldwater Board of Public Utilities Diector Jeff Budd, who addressed the CBPU Boartd of Directors Tuesday.
Budd said the majority of residents who lost power were restored that same day, but there were about 55 homes where the power didn’t come back until the next day.
Utility crews from Marshall, Hillsdale, Sturgis and Bryan, Ohio provided mutual aid assistance in getting the lights back on.
The final costs of the restoration will be presented at the July CBPU board meeting, but Budd gave a ballpark figure of about $60,000 Tuesday night.
Meantime, three CBPU employees were thanked during Tuesday night’s Board of Directors meeting, as they were among the many out of town crews dispatched to Celina, Ohio as part of mutual aid agreements to help restore power in the days after an EF-3 tornado struck the city May 27.
Jory Wilson, Kent Brecheisen and Corey Brewer volunteered their time to help restore power in the region.
The tornado killed one person and injured seven others. At least 40 homes were damaged.
