COLDWATER, MI (WTVB) – A small fire at the former Franklin Learning Center on South Fremont Street which caused smoke to fill the closed building was quickly put out by Coldwater firefighters on Wednesday night.
Fire Marshall Steve Trall says the fire is under investigation but they did find some clothes and a type of rubber material.
Police and firefighters rushed to 95 South Fremont just after 8:10 p.m..
The Coldwater Fire Department reports their crews arrived to find smoke and flames showing from a door on the north side of the building.
After the fire was extinguished, the building was searched. Neighbors have complained about homeless people using the building but no one was found inside.
The fire was contained to the entry hallway on the north side of the building. Damages were estimated at $500.
Fire crews were on the scene for about 90 minutes until the smoke was cleared from the building. Boards that had covered up windows and doors were removed to help with the ventilation. Coldwater firefighters were assisted by Coldwater Police and Lifecare Ambulance.
