COLDWATER, MI (WTVB) – A stormy Saturday evening gave way to dry weather Sunday, allowing for outdoor activities like the annual Fly-In Breakfast at the Branch County Memorial Airport, and graduation ceremonies on the football fields at Coldwater and Quincy High Schools. Sunny weather continues to start the week.
Not every area of Branch County received rain Saturday, but many of the spots that did get wet received intense rain, thunder, and even hail.
The National Weather Service first issued a Severe Thunderstorm Watch for Branch County until 11:00 p.m. Saturday. Around 7:45 p.m. a Severe Thunderstorm Warning was issued for northeastern Branch County. Especially hard hit were the Girard and Tekonsha areas. That warning expired at 8:45 p.m.
Just before 9:00 p.m. another Severe Thunderstorm Warning was issued for southern Branch County, as a severe thunderstorm popped up near Bronson, traveling south of Coldwater. That also brought heavy rain and some small hail.
Hail was reported in Sturgis, Bronson and Hillsdale. Between four to five inches of rain was reported in the Angola area where silver dollar to golf ball sized hail was reported in an earlier storm on Saturday.
Shortly before 8:00 p.m., Branch County 911 Central Dispatch received a report of a 13 year old boy struck by lightening on Blossom Road. No further information is available at this time on that incident.
