COLDWATER, MI (WTVB) – The Coldwater City Council introduced an amended ordinance Tuesday night covering the use of consumer fireworks in the city.
The State of Michigan has amended its 2012 Fireworks Safety Act that allows local communities to reduce the number of days and hours consumer fireworks can be used in their municipality.
The City Council got into a nearly 20 minute discussion during their May 13, 2019 meeting and concerns were brought up about potential fines of up to $1,000 for violations.
City Attorney Megan Angell said the proposed fines are now less than the previous figures.
The first infraction would result in a $100 fine, the second offense within a year would cost $250 and if the third offense takes place within a year the fine would be $500.
The cutoff time for fireworks on New Year’s Eve would be 1:00 a.m.. On all other days it would be at 11:45 p.m.
The ordinance is scheduled to come back before the Council for second and final reading June 10, 2019.
