DETROIT, MI (WKZO AM/FM) – Jonathan Schoop homered in the sixth inning to lift the Tigers past the Twins 3-2 in Detroit. Jeimer Candelario also went deep and Miguel Cabrera plated the other run for the Tigers, who swept the three-game series and have won five straight overall. Cabrera collected his two-thousandth career hit with Detroit. Tyler Alexander picked up the win in relief.
Tigers rookie Casey Mize is still seeking his first major league win. The 23-year-old right-hander made his third career start in Sunday’s game. Mize struck out four over three innings of two-run ball in a no-decision. He’s 0-1 with a 6.75 ERA on the season.
Jorge Polanco homered for Minnesota, which has dropped a season-high five in-a-row. Kenta Maeda allowed three runs in six frames as he fell to 4-1 with the loss.
The Tigers have won five straight to get to .500 at 16-16. They are three games out of a wild card spot and four back in the AL Central.
The Tigers are off today. They open a brief, two-game series with the Brewers starting tomorrow night at Miller Park. Spencer Turnbull will start the opener for Detroit and Adrian Houser for Milwaukee. The Tigers will then play a five-game series at Minnesota this weekend.
And today is the last day major league teams can swing deals to add players for the stretch run. The trade deadline is at 4 p.m. this afternoon.
