SHERWOOD, MI (WTVB) – A Sherwood man was arraigned on two charges Tuesday in Branch County District Court following what Michigan State Police described as an aggravated domestic assault involving a female acquaintance.
54-year-old Michael Smith is facing charges of assault with intent to do great bodily harm less than murder and domestic violence. His bond has been set at $100,000 with ten percent allowed.
State Police say alcohol was a possible factor in the Monday evening incident. Troopers were sent to a Sherwood residence at about 6:00 p.m. after the woman went to a neighbor’s house and reported the incident to 911.
Troopers say the suspect fled before they arrived. They found his vehicle hidden in a wooded area about a half mile from Barnhart Road near Webb Road in Batavia Township.
A K-9 tracking dog was brought in to help with the search. Smith was found about a quarter mile away hiding behind some fallen trees and was then taken to the Branch County Jail.
State Police say the woman suffered non life threatening injuries.
