COLDWATER, MI (WTVB) – A representative from the Lake George Cottagers Association told the Branch County Board of Commissioners during their work session Tuesday that they felt going through the Branch County Circuit Court to set the legal lake level for the Michigan side of the lake was the best option to pursue.
County Administrator Bud Norman told Commissioners two weeks ago it was one of two options they could consider. The other was a petition that would be signed by lake residents.
It’s the last step in the process involving two states in order to fund repairs to the dam that was built in 1927 on the Indiana side of the lake.
Rick Weaver from the Cottagers Association said they have sufficient background information to have the Commissioners send a resolution to the Circuit Court.
He pointed out the lake levels were established many years ago.
Norman explained the advantages and disadvantages of both options two weeks ago. If the Circuit Court option is pursued, there would be a resolution requiring a preliminary engineering study and a cash bond of $10,000. But Norman said the court process would be faster. He said the matter will be on the agenda for the Commissioners March 29th work session and a decision is expected to be made at that time.
