COLDWATER, MI (WTVB) – A Coldwater High School senior can count herself in rare academic company in the nation. In an announcement this week, Selena Hostetler has been recognized as a National Merit ® Scholarship Finalist by the National Merit Scholarship Corporation.
Out of the 3.6 million current high school seniors in the United States, only 15,000 qualify as a Finalist to move on in the academic scholarship program based on their performance in the national PSAT and SAT tests taken by students throughout the nation. This places Hostetler in the top 0.4% of all academic performing seniors in the nation.
Hostetler was honored during a student assembly Thursday at Coldwater High School. According to CHS Principal Bill Milnes, “Her academic and personal accomplishments have a lot to do with her character and commitment to excellence.”
Over the years, going back to 1959, CHS has had 40 National Merit Finalists, with the latest being Jessica Leviton in 2015, Austin Littley in 2013, and Jason Delaney in 2011, who is also one of 15 CHS Cardinals over the history of the program who have been recognized with the highest designation of being a Merit Scholar.
In addition to a financial award from the National Merit Scholarship Corporation, National Merit ® Scholarship Finalists are also eligible for many scholarship opportunities at schools throughout the nation.
