LANSING, MI (WTVB)- Governor Gretchen Whitmer said during her State of the State speech on Tuesday night that she wants to make Michigan the first state in the Midwest to offer every high school graduate with at least a B average funding assistance for at least the first two years of higher education, whether that be at a Community College, a four year school or vocational education.
She wants to increase the number of Michigan residents between 16 and 64 with a post secondary credential to 60 percent by 2030.
But State Senator Mike Shirkey, who is also the Senate Majority Leader, feels while that’s a great goal, Whitmer’s focus is wrong and that it’s not far enough. Shirkey also warned that if something that is given away, it creates artificial demand.
Despite his policy disagreements with her, Shirkey says he will work with the Governor.
As expected, Democrats were pleased with the speech while Republicans are taking a wait-and-see attitude about her proposals.
