COLDWATER, MI (WTVB) – A man charged in connection with a violent incident in the 500 block of Morse Street which left a woman injured on December 2, 2018 agreed to a plea agreement with Monday in Branch County Circuit Court.
49-year-old Daniel Torres entered a no contest plea to a charge of felonious assault. A habitual offender sentencing enhancement will be dropped in exchange for the plea.
Torres is scheduled to be sentenced on March 11, 2019.
He was found competent to stand trial during a December 27, 2018 hearing in Branch County District Court.
Torres was charged after a 53-year-old woman suffered facial bruising, lacerations and a reported broken jaw during the incident.
Torres is also a registered sex offender with the State of Michigan after being convicted of first degree criminal sexual conduct in Pontiac back in 1993.
Branch County Sheriff John Pollack had to explain to the County Board of Commissioners during meetings in December about the excessive amount of overtime that piled up for his department due mostly to what the Sheriff called Torres “aggressive behavior”.
The Sheriff said during a work session just a few days after the incident that psychiatric services were unable to quickly and efficiently place Torres in a facility that could handle and treat him. He added that two of his officers had to watch him all the time while he was confined at ProMedica Coldwater Regional Hospital.
