COLDWATER, MI (WTVB) – Al McClellan was named the president of the Quincy School Board of Education for the next year during the board’s annual organizational meeting on Monday night.
Donna Hines was elected as vice president, Greg Richar was chosen as secretary and Jason Shilling was chosen as treasurer.
The board also decided to keep meeting on the third Monday of the month.
During the regular monthly meeting, the board authorized a $500 payment to any full-time teachers who submit their letter of retirement before February 14th.
They also approved the updating of the district’s suspension and expulsion policy.
The changes include the authorization of the Superintendent to suspend a student for no longer than 59 school days as provided by the Revised School Code. The Superintendent can also recommend to the Board that a student be subject to a long-term suspension, be expelled or permanently expelled. The Board shall act on any appeal to the decisions made by the Superintendent.
Michigan law prohibits corporal punishment. The Quincy policy states that while students may require disciplinary action in various forms, the Board does not condone the use of unreasonable force and fear as an appropriate procedure in student discipline.
Along those same lines, the staff is not allowed to use physical force or violence to compel obedience. If all other means fail, staff members may always resort to the removal of the student from the classroom or District through suspension or expulsion procedures.
