COLDWATER, MI (WTVB) – Some of the coldest weather in recent years moved in Monday morning as clear skies and calm winds caused the mercury to dip well below zero throughout the area.
Coldwater set a record low for the date as the temperature dropped to 15 degrees below zero. That broke the old record by four degrees.
It got down to 18 below in Marshall and 13 below in Battle Creek.
Temperatures were still well below zero at many locations even after the sun came up.
The National Weather Service issued a wind chill advisory for the morning hours. Luckily, the winds were calm which prevented wind chills from getting any lower than the air temperatures.
The coldest official temperature reported was 20 below near Jonesville.
Some of our listeners reported colder temperatures. One on Francisco Road near Union City reported a temperature of 29 degrees below zero. Another in Butler Township reported 24 degrees below zero.
A number of people couldn’t get their vehicles to start due to the frigid weather which resulted in average wait for them of 60 to 90 minutes for a tow truck.
