JACKSON, MI (WTVB) – A 17-3 third quarter, culminating with Gage McGuire’s milestone basket to break the Coldwater High School career scoring record, helped turn what was a close game for Coldwater at the half into a 63-43 win at Lumen Christi. At one point in the second quarter, the two teams were tied at 18-all, but the Cardinals pulled away to take a 30-21 lead at the half, and they never looked back.
McGuire’s wound up with a double-double, with 24 points, 11 rebounds, 2 assists, a steal, and 3 blocks. His career point tally currently stands at 1180 points – one more than the old record set by Rick Gates 44 years ago. Dylan Targgart added 13 points and 9 rebounds as the Cardinals improved to 9-2 overall, 6-1 in the Interstate 8.

Oriole Week at Quincy High School ended on a high note, as William Dunn’s 37-point, 13 rebound performance helped propel Quincy to a 65-37 win against Concord. The Orioles only led 11-8 after the first quarter, but outscored the Yellow Jackets in the second and third quarters by a combined 38-13 tally. Caleb McCavit had 6 points, 7 rebounds, 6 assists, and 3 steals, and Jordan Nelson had 6 points and 6 boards as Quincy remained undefeated on the season at 10-0 overall, 6-0 in the Big 8.

In a battle of second-place teams in the Big 8, Homer held off visiting Union City 72-68 to take sole possession of second place in the league at 5-1, 6-5 overall. Larson Kever had a team-high 27 points, 14 rebounds, 5 assists, 3 steals and 2 blocks, while Kyle Johnson scored 12 and Brendan Stuchell had an 11-point, 10-assist double-double with 7 rebounds as the Chargers drop to third place in the Big 8 at 4-2, 7-4 overall.

Coldwater held Lumen Christi to single-digit point totals in every quarter of their 53-16 win at the Cox Memorial Fieldhouse in Jackson. Emilee Smoker scored a game-high 9 points to go with 3 steals, while Tyler Schied had 8 points and 6 rebounds and Samantha Rodesiler had 8 points of her own; Olivia Foley, Kelsi Herlan, and Mia Rzepka had 7 points apiece as the Cardinals improve to 10-1 overall, 7-0 in the Interstate 8. Carlee Crabtree didn’t score but did lead the team with 8 rebounds, 5 assists, and 3 steals.
The Cardinal JV girls also played Friday night and picked up a 46-28 win at Lumen Christi. Allison Miller had 12 points, 6 rebounds, and 6 steals, while Abby Herman had 10 points and 9 boards as Coldwater improved to 6-3.
