BRONSON, MI (WTVB) – A number of Branch County high school basketball teams returned to the hardwood Friday night following the Christmas Break layoff.
Bronson hosted Springport for a girls and boys basketball doubleheader. The Spartans remain undefeated in the Big 8 girls basketball standings thanks to their 48-40 win over the Lady Vikings. Springport led by only one at the half, 19-18, but pulled away thanks to a 20-10 third quarter. Meagan Lasky led Bronson with 16 points, while Keona Salesman added 9.
The Viking girls drop to 3-3 overall, 2-1 in the Big 8.
The boys game saw Springport open up a 21-13 halftime lead over Bronson. They Spartans never looked back, as they posted a 49-42 win. Hudson Wotta had 21 points and 8 rebounds for the Vikings, who drop to 1-7 overall, 1-2 in the Big 8.
Over at Reading High School’s Kerspilo Gymnasium, Union City split their doubleheader with Reading. The Rangers held off the Chargers in the girls game 49-40. Autumn Carpenter led all scorers with 18 points and 10 rebounds for Union City, while Logan Allen added 11 points as the Charger girls drop to 1-6 overall, 0-3 in the Big 8.
In the boys game, Union City used a 15-3 third quarter to propel themselves to a 48-37 win against Reading. Larson Kever had a double-double with 18 points, 11 rebounds, 4 assists, and 5 steals, while Carson Stanton scored 11 as the Chargers improve to 4-3 overall, 2-1 in the Big 8.
Quincy hosted Lenawee Christian for a non-conference girls basketball game, and unlike Thursday’s boys contest, the Cougars got the better of the Orioles with a 70-34 win. Katie Rathbun had 9 points and 9 rebounds, while Jessica Holcomb had 7 points and 4 boards as the Quincy drops to 4-3.
On today’s schedule: In wrestling, Coldwater travels to Clinton for the Dave Elliott Memorial Tournament, Bronson is at the New Lothrup Invitational, and Quincy and Union City are at Hillsdale for the Dan Taylor Wrestling Tournament.
In gymnastics, Coldwater is at the Rockford Flip-Flop Invitational. In competitive cheer, Coldwater and Bronson are at the Leslie Blackhawk Invitational.
Coldwater opens up its bowling season at Marshall Lanes for the Marshall Scotch Doubles Tournament.
