COLDWATER, MI (WTVB) – Branch County Treasurer Ann Vrablic asked the county Board of Commissioners during their work session Friday for some guidance after she was recently told by the Sheriff’s Office they would not have the availability to escort her employees bank deposits.
Vrablic told commissioners she received an e-mail last Friday from Undersheriff Keith Eichler that said this was due to the planning of the new Sheriff’s Office and Jail.
Vrablic said she doesn’t feel comfortable doing the deposits by herself or having a staff member do it.
Options being explored at this time include using a courier service. Vrablic said there were quite a variety of responses from 16 county treasurer offices in Michigan who responded to an e-mail she sent out asking how they handle deposit transports.
Some of the county treasurer’s get help from their Sheriff’s Department at no charge. Others use their own cars and get reimbursed for mileage.
Vrablic does not have a recommendation at this point but she believes that if a courier service is hired, the cost should be allocated to each department.
Commissioners can not take any formal action during their regular meeting Tuesday since it was an information item for Friday’s work session. It could come back before them when they meet again in two weeks.
