BRANCH COUNTY, MI (WTVB) – When area residents take to social media these days to talk about the weather, the general consesus is we need some rain.
The latest report from the U.S. Drought Monitor shows the southeastern portion of Branch County is “abnormally dry” when it comes to the recent amount of rainfall.
All of Hillsdale County fall into that same category.
The Drought Monitor says during “abnormally dry” conditions, grass fires increase, lawns turn brown and landscape and gardens are watered more frequently.
Abnormally dry conditions exist throughout northeast Indiana. The southern half of Steuben County is included in an area considered to have moderate drought conditions.
A moderate drought according to the Drought Monitor can lead to stunted crop growth, low creek and pond levels and the possibility of blue-green algae blooms appearing.
The M.S.U. Extension Service weather station at the Bloom Dairy Farm west of Coldwater has recorded just over three inches of rain during July with just about all of the rain falling on July 10 and last Thursday.
The rain on the tenth of July broke a two week dry spell at that location.
