COLON TOWNSHIP, MI (WTVB/WNWN) – A Bellevue man drowned on Saturday at the Leidy Lake Campground in Colon Township.
St. Joseph County Sheriff Mark Lillywhite reports deputies were sent to the campgrounds at about 3:50 p.m. after 24-year-old David Burns, Junior walked into Leidy Lake and unknowingly walked into deep water.
The Sheriff’s Department says he did not know how to swim.
Burns was not breathing when he was recovered from the water by his family members and other witnesses who transported him by boat to the campground beach and began lifesaving measures.
Lifecare Ambulance Medics and Colon Fire / Rescue personnel also tried to revive Burns but he was pronounced dead at the scene.
The County Sheriff’s Office received assistance from Colon Police, Lifecare Ambulance, Colon Fire / Rescue and the St. Joseph County Sheriff’s Office Marine Patrol.
