COLDWATER, MI (WTVB) – After going almost a week without announcing a COVID-19 related death of a prisoner originally housed at Lakeland Correctional Facility in Coldwater, statistics on the Michigan Department of Corrections website show the facility’s death toll has risen to 22 including two over the last couple of days.
Since April first, there have been a total of 59 deaths of Michigan prisoners who had tested positive for COVID-19.
Over half of the population at Lakeland tested positive for COVID-19. The M.D.O.C. conducted 1,430 tests with 793 coming back positive and another 636 were negative.
The number of Lakeland staff members who became sick from the virus stands at 34.
No information has been provided by the M.D.O.C. as to how many Lakeland inmates and staff members have recovered from coronavirus.
