COLDWATER, MI (WTVB) – For the first time since last Tuesday, the Michigan Department of Corrections has announced the death of a prisoner originally housed at the Lakeland Correctional Facility who tested positive for COVID-19.
Statistics on the Michigan D.O.C. website which were updated on Monday night show that 21 Lakeland prisoners who tested positive have died.
The D.O.C. has administered 1,430 tests at Lakeland with 793 positive results and 636 prisoners testing negative. A total of 34 Lakeland staff members have tested positive since the outbreak began.
No information is available on the number of Lakeland prisoners and staff members who have recovered from the virus.
Statewide, 57 prisoners have died after testing positive for COVID-19. There have been over 3,000 positive tests of Michigan prisoners out of over 31,000 who were tested.
Lakeland’s 21 COVID-19 related deaths are the most of any Michigan prison facility. The Parnall Correctional Facility near Jackson is second with 10 deaths.
Meanwhile, the Calhoun County Public Health Department has reported the first death of a person who had tested positive for COVID-19 since last Thursday. That brought Calhoun County’s death from the virus up to 19.
