COLDWATER, MI (WTVB) – Statistics posted on the Michigan Department of Corrections website on Sunday shows 50 Michigan prisoners have died after they tested positive for COVID-19.
The most recent death which was reported on Sunday was of a prisoner who had originally been housed at Lakeland Correctional Facility in Coldwater.
It was the 19th death of a prisoner at Lakeland where there have been a total of 791 positive tests for COVID-19 since the outbreak began. There were also 634 negative tests while 14 of the prisoners who tested positive have since recovered. Another 23 went to a step down unit after they were considered to be no longer contagious.
Over 1,400 coronavirus tests on Lakeland prisoners have been conducted by the M.D.O.C..
In addition, 34 staff members at Lakeland have tested positive for the virus since the outbreak began. There is no information from the M.D.O.C. on the number of staff members who have recovered.
