COLDWATER, MI (WTVB) – The COVID-19 death toll at the Lakeland Correctional Facility increased on Monday as the Michigan Department of Corrections reported a 15th prisoner who was originally housed at the facility passed away after testing positive for the virus.
It was the first death reported of a Lakeland prisoner since last Wednesday. A total of 44 Michigan prisoners have died after they tested positive for COVID-19.
Over 1,400 Lakeland prisoners were tested for the virus two weeks ago after numerous cases were reported at the prison in Coldwater.
According to the latest information from the M.D.O.C., there were 791 positive tests while 634 of the tests were negative.
Results on 13 tests were pending. Five prisoners have recovered while 23 were sent to a step down unit after it was felt they were no longer contagious.
There have also been 33 Lakeland staff members who have tested positive for coronavirus.
