COLDWATER, MI (WTVB) – The Coldwater City Council passed a resolution Monday night in support of the proposed MDOT roadway improvement project on U.S. 12 from Willow Lane to Western and Butters Avenue but not before they made several suggestions.
MDOT wants to convert that stretch of U.S. 12 from its existing four-lane configuration to a three-lane configuration during the summer of 2023.
The work could take place sooner if the funding becomes available.
U.S. 12 is two lanes west of the City before it expands into four lanes for a short distance and then becomes a three lane configuration which includes a center turn lane from Western Avenue east into downtown.
Council member Jim Knaack had concerns about keeping the speed limit at 45 miles an hour.
MDOT’s Corey Hackworth said they can look into that.
Council member Michael Beckwith said the project will be a definite improvement.
Ways to improve pedestrian safety was also discussed as well as extending the center turn lane to Oak Grove Cemetery. The scope of the project will include the milling and paving of the road surface and refurbishing the bridge over the Coldwater River.
