COLDWATER, MI (WTVB) – The Michigan Department of Corrections reported Sunday night that six prisoners at the Lakeland Correctional Facility in Coldwater have died from COVID-19.
Four of the deaths at Lakeland have been reported since Wednesday. Lakeland now has the most prisoner deaths from the virus among all of the M.D.O.C. facilities. The Parnall Correctional Facility near Jackson is second with five prisoner deaths.
Sunday night’s report on the M.D.O.C. website shows Lakeland has had 132 prisoners tested for coronavirus with 112 tests coming back positive while 20 others were negative. Fifteen Lakeland prisoners who previously tested positive for COVID-19 have been moved to a step-down unit. They have been medically cleared by the M.D.O.C.’s chief medical officer, are symptom free and are no longer considered contagious.
In addition, 26 staff members at Lakeland have tested positive for COVID-19 as the Coldwater prison continues to be a hot spot for the virus.
Parnall Correctional Facility has had the most COVID-19 cases with 164 prisoners and 68 staff members testing positive.
