MARCELLUS TOWNSHIP, MI (WKZO AM/FM) — Three people are injured, two critically, after a car crashed into a train in Cass County.
It happened around 6 p.m. Thursday on the tracks over Savage Road near the intersection of Waterstradt Street in Marcellus Township.
Cass County Sheriff deputies say 44-year-old Dustin Hooker from Battle Creek was traveling northbound on Savage when his brakes failed, causing the vehicle to collide into the passing train.
His two passengers, 43-year-old Paul Smith of Tekonsha and 33-year-old Gayland Campbell of Marcellus, were not wearing seatbelts which caused them to be ejected from the vehicle.
Smith was airlifted to the hospital and Campbell was taken by ambulance, with both last listed in critical condition. Hooker was also hospitalized and in stable condition. Nobody on the CN train was hurt.
Alcohol and drugs do not appear to be a factor, but authorities are still investigating the crash.
