COLDWATER, MI. – (WTVB) – Four players scored in double figures as the Coldwater Cardinals defeated the Portage Central Mustangs 71-49 in their regular season finale on Thursday night at the Coach Floyd Eby Gymnasium.
It was a close game in the first half as Coldwater only led 29-25 at halftime. A 20-15 third quarter gave Coldwater some breathing room as they increased their lead to 49-40. Coldwater dominated the fourth quarter especially on the defensive end as they outscored the Mustangs 22-9.
Seniors Dylan Targgart and Austin Santure both had double-doubles. Targgart led Coldwater with 19 points and 10 rebounds while Santure had 17 points and 11 rebounds. Ethan Crabtree had 14 points and Brandon Downs finished with 11 points and five assists. Spencer Rodesiler and Jaxon Janusz both scored four points. Rodesiler dished out eight assists.
The Cardinals will take a 14-6 record into their district opener against Kalamazoo Loy Norrix on Monday at 5:00 p.m. at Battle Creek Lakeview.
Portage Central hung on to beat Coldwater in the J.V. game 41-40. Lu LeBron led Coldwater 18 points.
Meanwhile, the Quincy Orioles will take a 17-3 record into the Division Three District Tournament that they will host next week in the Coolest Gym in Michigan as they defeated Mendon 67-57 in Quincy on Thursday night.
Will Dunn led the Orioles with 25 points and five assists as he broke the career scoring mark. Dominic Lopez held the previous mark of 1,707 points. Dunn tied the record with a free throw, then hit his second to eclipse the school scoring mark. Kyler Economou had 24 points and 10 rebounds. Kyle Rodesiler and Matthew Hagaman both had eight points.
The Orioles will face White Pigeon in the district semifinals next Wedneday night at 7:30 p.m..
