UNION CITY, MI (WTVB) – Union City village officials say the Riley Dam has pumped out over 1.7 million kilowatt hours over the last year thanks to high lake levels.
They report January was the second highest month of generation in the last 10 years.
The generation saved Union City electric customers over $114,000 over the past year.
According to a post on the village’s Facebook page, Union City residential electric customers enjoy one of the lowest rates in Michigan and they are 30 percent lower than the Michigan average.
The 97 year old Riley Dam generated about 10 percent of the village’s power needs for the year.
A recent study of the Riley Dam says it has the potential to generate nearly half of Union City’s electrical needs.
Further costs and benefit studies still need to be done.
