ALBION, MI (WKZO) – Student’s of a former district in Calhoun County are graduating at higher rates after being merged into the Marshall school system.
Albion high’s graduation rate reached a low of just 58 percent in the years leading up to it’s closure. Today, the students who would have attended Albion are receiving diplomas at the rate of 94 percent at Marshall High School.
The district was taken over by the larger community of Marshall in 2016, after struggling with burdening debt and low test scores. Even now there are disagreements, like a recent row over how much property taxes Albion residents should pay, but there has been progress.
Proponents of the merger are now going as far as calling it a success, arguing that the consolidated funding from teaming up has allowed for more investment in services targeting at-risk students.
