COLDWATER, MI (WTVB) – After a nearly one hour discussion Monday night, the Coldwater Planning Commission tabled the review of the site plan for a proposed American Moslem Society mosque at 129 Perkins Street until later this month.
The Planning Commission decided to take the matter up again during a special meeting on February 27 after the Zoning Board of Appeals has a chance to take action on a 19 foot dimensional variance for the rear yard setback.
The Z.B.A. will meet on February 19.
A neighboring property owner has written a letter to the city saying he was in favor of the American Moslem Society’s request for the setback variance.
Parking was also discussed, as the applicant is proposing 86 spaces but city staff calculates 105 spaces are required for the Place of Worship use. An additional parking lot is available across the street which has 20 spaces. On street parking is not allowed on either side of Perkins Street.
The proposed new building would be 28,000 square feet on two and a quarter acres.
The site earlier got a special use permission request approved but the applicant has revised their plan to an extent which requires a new review.
