BRANCH COUNTY, MI (WTVB) – Michigan State Police say they recently managed to prevent an elderly Branch County woman from getting scammed out of $15,000.
They say the woman was contacted by someone who claimed to be her grandson.
The caller stated he was in court for an at fault crash and needed the 15 grand in order to be released.
The woman went to her bank, withdrew the money, put it in a box and sent it by way of FedEx to a destination address given to her by the fraudsters.
The woman later that evening started to have second thoughts and called the State Police.
An investigating trooper quickly called FedEx authorities who assisted in diverting the package from delivery.
The police agency in the receiving town was contacted by the trooper. The package was safely intercepted and returned to the woman.
State Police once again remind residents to always be skeptical of phone solicitations. Luckily, the woman involved in this scam managed to get a good portion of her life savings returned to her.
